Personal Development
At our school, we believe that personal development is just as important as academic success. We are committed to nurturing confident, respectful, resilient and responsible young people who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school. Through a rich and varied programme of opportunities, we support every child to develop the knowledge, skills and character needed to thrive in modern Britain and make a positive contribution to society.
Personal development is woven throughout all aspects of school life. Our carefully planned PSHE curriculum helps children understand how to stay healthy and safe, build positive relationships, celebrate diversity and develop emotional wellbeing. Regular assemblies reinforce our school values and provide opportunities for reflection, discussion and the exploration of important local, national and global issues.
Children's learning is further enriched through educational visits, visitors to school, themed enrichment days and a wide range of extra-curricular clubs. These experiences broaden horizons, spark curiosity and allow pupils to discover and develop new interests and talents. Through leadership opportunities, teamwork, creative activities, physical challenges and community involvement, pupils gain confidence, independence and a sense of responsibility.
Our commitment to personal development aligns closely with both the EYFS Framework and our wider Enrichment Framework, ensuring that children begin their journey with strong foundations and continue to benefit from a wealth of experiences as they progress through the school. From developing communication skills and self-regulation in the early years to fostering aspiration, citizenship and leadership in older pupils, we provide a progressive programme that enables every child to flourish.
Personal Development in the Early Years
In the Early Years, personal development is supported through the three prime areas of learning:
Communication and Language – developing listening, attention, understanding and speaking skills, enabling children to express themselves confidently and communicate effectively with others.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development – helping children build positive relationships, understand and manage their emotions, develop resilience, confidence and independence, and learn how to work and play cooperatively with others.
Physical Development – supporting children to develop gross and fine motor skills, understand the importance of healthy lifestyles and build the physical foundations needed for future learning.
