Supporting Your Child in Maths

Thank you to all the parents, carers and family members who attended our Crafternoon and supported this special project inspired by 365 Penguins. It was wonderful to see so many families working together and enjoying a shared maths and reading experience.

The finished display showcases the creativity and imagination of our school community. From cotton-wool penguins and paper crafts to detailed drawings and 3D models, every creation is unique and reflects the effort and enthusiasm of those involved.

Helping at Home: Schools and Families Programme

At Owston Park Primary Academy, we are proud to be part of the National Numeracy Schools & Families Programme. The programme aims to build children's confidence with maths while supporting parents and carers to feel more positive and confident about helping with maths at home.

Through the programme, families can take part in maths activities, workshops and home learning challenges that demonstrate how maths is used in everyday life. We also share practical strategies and resources to help children develop a positive attitude towards maths and grow in confidence as mathematicians.

As part of the programme, your child will receive a Maths Scrapbook activity every fortnight to complete at home with a family member. These enjoyable activities encourage mathematical discussion, problem-solving and real-life application of maths in a fun and accessible way. The completed activities can then be added to their Maths Scrapbook.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Helping Your Child Feel Better About Maths workshop. We hope you found the session useful and took away some ideas to support your child at home.

The workshop slides can be viewed below.

Helping at Home: Number Facts

  • Talk positively about maths and encourage your child to have a go, even when they find something challenging.

  • Practise times tables little and often.

  • Look for opportunities to use maths in everyday life, such as cooking, shopping, telling the time and handling money.

  • Encourage your child to explain how they worked something out rather than just giving an answer.

  • Read any guidance or home learning sent home by your child's teacher.

  • Speak to your child's class teacher if you would like advice on how to support your child with a particular area of maths.
