Foundational Skills

Embedding foundational skills in early reading, handwriting and maths is essential to giving every child the best possible start in their education. Developing strong early reading skills, including phonics, fluency and comprehension, enables children to access the wider curriculum, develop their vocabulary and foster a lifelong love of reading. Consistent practice in handwriting supports the development of letter formation, pencil control, fluency and confidence, allowing children to communicate their ideas clearly and independently. Similarly, securing early mathematical skills, including number recognition, counting, number bonds and calculation, builds a strong understanding of number and provides the foundations for more complex mathematical concepts. By explicitly teaching, regularly revisiting and embedding these essential skills throughout the school day, we help children develop confidence, independence and a secure foundation for future learning, ensuring every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
